INTRA-GALACTIC FOREST

SEPTEMBER 2021

Awbury Arboretum

Germantown, Philadelphia

Drawn from recurrent themes, kindered projects and chance encounters had during S(tree)twork’s Wander, Intra- Galactic Forest turns to the transformative power of sound to attend to the dense interrelations a forest can present.

Through hands-on workshops, we slow down the pace of inquiry and allow for the emergence of the unknown, the unheard, the invisible and the hidden. By tuning into different ways of knowing, we ask what modes of coexistence can be amplified and what tools we should use to transmit our findings.

Intra-Galactic Forest brings together local musicians, sound artists, woodworkers, print-makers and writers together with new participants and visitors to the Awbury Arboretum. Each workshop considers various dimensions of trees; electromagnetic, social, biologic, geologic, and astrophysical.

SOUND MUSEUM COLLECTIVE

INTO THE GROUND AND UP INTO THE SKY

SEPTEMBER 11-12TH 2021

We will gather in Awbury Arboretum to record local forest frequencies—earthbound, subterranean, aeolian, and waterborne. Workshop participants will listen, receive and process sounds while expanding our notions of the spacetime dimension that trees inhabit–particularly given their ability to travel via seeds broadcast through the air. We will collect and process sounds of pileated woodpeckers, owls and migratory birds that inhabit the forest’s canopy; as well as sounds of the underground networks of mycelium, and the local micro-shed.

Day 1: Collect field recordings for sound bank
Day 2: Process recordings with wind and water flow sensors.

Recordings will be elaborated during the Summoning of the Future Forest performance on Sunday, September 26th.

Participants will develop sensitive listening skills and learn how to use existing and adapted tools and methods for recording.
